When I first started making rings I made my first lathe using a sewing machine motor and found it to be extremely useful. I mainly used sandpaper to shape the rings and they turned out great, and even better with practice.

The motor, purchased from Amazon. You can save a little money If you have a sewing machine motor already. Just a heads up sometimes the motor spindle is just a little bit different in size, so the adapter may need to be modified to get a really tight fit, but that is usually pretty easy to do. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G9NFXN8
